Latvia to have 36 regions after administrative territorial reform - ministry

13 August 2019

After talking to local governments, the Environmental Protection and Regional Development Ministry has decided to add one more region to the administrative territorial reform map, as Environmental Protection and Regional Development Minister Juris Puce (For Development/For) told reporters on Monday.

As a result, the number of local governments in Latvia will be reduced from 119 to 36, not 35 as the ministry proposed originally. Puce said that the additional region was located in Greater Riga, but declined to reveal which one it was. Puce went on to say that the territorial reform had been altered based on local governments' recommendations.

The Environmental Protection and Regional Development Ministry has analyzed population dynamics and concluded that a new model of administrative territorial reform was possible. All other criteria remain unchanged, said Puce.

The ministry's report will be submitted to the government next week, after which it will be harmonized with all relevant state institutions and Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments.
