Coalition shortlists two candidates for Bank of Latvia governor

02 December 2019

Negotiators representing Latvia's coalition parties have shortlisted two candidates for the Bank of Latvia's next governor, but were unable to agree on one of them, De Facto program of Latvian Television reported, citing multiple sources. The two candidates left in the race after last week's talks are the Financial and Capital Market Commission's (FCMC) former head Uldis Cerps and Bank of Latvia Council member Martins Kazaks.

The deadline for applications in the tender was extended last Friday so that the coalition parties could have more time for picking the right candidate. The Bank of Latvia needs a new governor because the central bank's current head Ilmars Rimsevics, on trial for corruption, is due to step down in three weeks' time.
