The Latvian Foster Family Association was founded in 1994, with the goal of supporting families that raise children who have been left without the care of their biological parents within a family environment. During the past 20 years LFFA has supported more than 300 families on an on-going basis.

The main objectives of the Association are:

The integration of foster children and children left without the care of their parents into society. In order to reach this objective, every year the LFFA organizes holiday festivities for all association members to take part in Easter, Christmas and New Years Eve functions. Families get invited to participate in cultural events, like theatre and movie shows, and museum exhibits. Furthermore, every year a group of foster children get to participate in a European Union exchange program.

Social assistance for dependents and foster families. To cover operational, and material costs, as well as to ensure financial support for child development initiatives, the LFFA works closely with local as well as international organizations and sponsors to secure donations and financial assistance. Families receive “food baskets” as well as humanitarian aid.

Seminars, conferences and professional “ideas” exchange. The LFFA holds knowledge sharing events informing Association members of rights they have under EU and Republic of Latvia Laws, and how these laws protect them and the children under their care. The LFFA holds such conferences and events at least once a year.

The LFFA cooperates with Latvian governmental institutions, the NGOs and other sponsors. The LFFA is a member of the Alternate Care Alliance and participates in all Alliance activities such as meeting with members of parliament, organizing fund raising events, and submitting laws for child exchange programs. These activities are all done with the intention of raising the standard of care for foster children and orphans.

Working with the media. Public awareness raising initiatives have been undertaken in order to inform the general public about the need for improving the state of foster care in Latvia.

We are proud that the Association has been able to function for the past 20 years to provide quality foster care assistance to foster children and parents. We have always remained successful in finding people who understand, appreciate and support our efforts.
